Top Fantasy Players: Tight Ends
Gates had a bit of a down year in 2006, but he’s still far and away the best tight end option in fantasy football. His touchdowns, receptions and yards were lower than they were in either 2004 or 2005. However, he still finished with an impressive showing of nine touchdowns, 71 receptions and over 900 receiving yards last season.
Tony Gonzalez
Gonzalez has been producing forever and should have another fine season in 2007. The 31-year-old has had at least 70 receptions in seven out of his last eight seasons. He bounced back from a two touchdown year in 2005 to post five touchdowns in 2006. He’ll have a new quarterback and the wide receivers on the Chiefs aren’t very good, but Gonzalez is a safe bet to be productive yet again.
Todd Heap
Over the last two seasons, Heap has been very consistent. In 2005, he had 75 receptions for 855 yards and seven touchdowns. In 2006, he had 73 receptions for 765 yards and six touchdowns. With the Ravens adding some more firepower to their offense, Heap should find himself open and could have a breakout year.
Vernon Davis
Davis got injured in 2006 but he showed enough promise that he’s going to be a hot name in fantasy football circles for 2007. While it wouldn’t be a good idea to reach for Davis, he’s a relatively safe option for your tight end slot. The 49ers will find ways to get the ball in his hands and Davis has the size and athleticism to be productive.
Kellen Winslow
If Winslow were on a better team, he’d be an even hotter fantasy football prospect than he already is. He had 89 catches last year after playing in only two games in his first two seasons in the NFL due to various injuries. Last season he played in all 16 games and was one of the better tight ends in the league. If the Browns can show some signs of improvement offensively, Winslow could be the recipient of a lot of the targets in the passing game.
Alge Crumpler
Crumpler would be higher on the list if it wasn’t for Michael Vick’s legal trouble. With Vick at quarterback, Crumpler is his number one option. If Vick is unavailable to quarterback the team, it’s possible that Crumpler’s role could diminish. Either way, Crumpler had eight touchdowns last year and is a viable mid-round pick in fantasy football.
