To me, nothing says fall like pumpkin. The deep orange hues, the plentiful supply of fresh winter squash in stores, and the traditional pumpkin pie served at Thanksgiving are all comforting images when I reminisce about fall. I also envision the reunion of family and friends for annual holiday gatherings, warm beverages and fireplaces, and out-of-town guests.
If you are hosting or attending holiday events this year, or if you want to treat yourself to an autumn drink in the comforts of your own home, here are two beverages starring pumpkin that will enliven and impress friends and family and add a unique twist to the festivities.
PUMPKIN SPICE LATTES
To start the day off on a good note, serve your guests pumpkin spice lattes with breakfast or brunch, or even as an afternoon pick-me-up. It will surely satisfy (and caffeinate!) your guests.
To start, brew a very strong cup of coffee or a shot of espresso. Heat a cup of milk and add the coffee and milk to a blender. Stir in about two tablespoons of canned pumpkin, sweetener to taste, half of a teaspoon vanilla extract, a teaspoon of cinnamon, and a pinch of nutmeg. Blend the drink until the pumpkin is incorporated and the milk froths. Taste the latte and add extra spices or sugar as needed. Pour into a large mug, top with cinnamon and optional whip cream.
This recipe is a single serving because if you have and use an espresso machine, drinks will have to be prepared one or two at a time. Otherwise, brew a strong pot of coffee and adjust the recipe to serve a large batch.
PUMPKIN BEER (blind taste test!)
Pumpkin beer is very seasonal and can be hard to come by after November, but you should be able to locate at least two different brands in specialty stores or in well-stocked supermarkets. Instead of serving bottles, engage the guests and set up a pumpkin taste test while appetizers are being served or after the meal with dessert.
Fill small cups with both types of beer and arrange them on opposite sides of a table. Prepare labels to identify each brand of beer (A and B, Pilgrims and Indians, Mashed potatoes and Gravy, etc.) and set them on the table. Be sure to remember which beer is which or the game is doomed! Let your guests sample, compare, and vote on which beer outdoes the other before revealing the brands behind each label.
This activity will encourage people to move about the room and mingle, and is a great ice-breaker if people do not all know each other well. New acquaintances, old friends, and close family will all enjoy the experience and energetic start to the meal. Cheers!
