College Football Rankings and the Big Questions

When the rankings came out Sunday, Alabama retained the #1 spot in the three major polls, although at this point the BCS rankings are frankly the only ones that really matter.

The Crimson Tide did not play Saturday in preparation for their biggest annual rivalry game coming up against Auburn, and they continue their undefeated season while preparing for the SEC Championship versus the red-hot Florida Gators.

After an utterly crushing defeat (65-21) of the previously unbeaten Texas Tech Red Raiders, Oklahoma proved that there are very much deserving of a shot at the National Championship, moving up to #3 in the BCS rankings behind Alabama and Texas.

The Texas Longhorns were also idle this past week and will bring their one-loss regular season to an end at the Lone Star Showdown versus Texas A&M on Saturday. Texas Tech, USC, Oklahoma, Florida, Utah, and Alabama all are still vying for #1 in the BCS standings.

Florida remains dominant since its one and only loss to Ole Miss and certainly has National Champion hopes in its future, especially if they can pull off a win against Alabama in the SEC Championship. First, however, they will face a ranked Florida State team, still in contention for an up-in-the air shot at the ACC title.

Four unbeatens still remain in Division I’s Top 25. Alabama, Utah, Boise State, and Ball State all remain undefeated, and Alabama stands as the most likely to play for the National Title if they can pull out a win against Florida in the SEC Championship.

As the season winds down, the list of Heisman hopefuls is similar to early-season predictions. Tim Tebow, the reigning Heisman winner, has led the Gators to the SEC Championship in December and only one loss this season. The race seems to be ‘all QB’ with Texas’ Colt McCoy, Oklahoma Sooner Sam Bradford, and Texas Tech’s Graham Harrell among the other top picks heading into the upcoming vote for the trophy.

So the big questions remain… who will win conference championships, who will win the coveted Heisman trophy, and who will stand at #1 and #2 and be chosen to battle it out for the title of National Champions?
