I have tried to review a number of football books by females. I can’t get through many of the books because of all the “how cute this player is” talk that has nothing to do with football. When I saw that Holly Robinson Peete wrote a book about football, I thought great another fluff football book. Yeah, she is football wife, but she is an actress. I have seen her on TV for years. Boy was I wrong about her!


Holly’s book “Get your Own Damn Beer, I’m Watching the Game!” is the best football book that I have read from a female perspective. Holly breaks the game down for anyone to understand. In the book, she has pictures to explain who each player is and then breaks down what each player does. She explains the running game and the passing game. If you ever wondered what the officials are doing, she explains the official’s job too.

“Get Your Own Damn Beer” has top 10 lists through out it from the greatest players to best butts in the NFL. These lists are called Cheat Sheets. They are quick points that can help get you started learning about football greats. The butt list is in the back of the book. She has already shown you that she is smart enough to understand football. At that point, a cute butt list is okay. Her book has substance, so a little fun is good.

Through out the book, Holly has history of the game. The pages are white, but the cheat sheets and history of the game are in gray. This is to help you find them quicker when you need to cheat. The origins of the game are explained. The game has changed over time and this book touches on it. It is a small part of the book, but it will give you a start of places to learn more. At the end, there is a great glossary of terms.

Holly gives us a side of the NFL that only a wife can give. She tells stories that happened to her and Rodney Peete. She tells funny stories and makes the reading not only educational, but fun. She has a conversation about being a wife with some of the NFL’s players’ wives. It gives you a view of how the wives feel about being a wife in the football spotlight.

Overall, I think “Get Your Own Damn Beer” is a great read. I read parts to my coach husband and he enjoyed it. So, it is not just a girl book. Oh and reading the list of great football names gives me another goal for my son, Thor ‘The Hammer’ Hodges.
