Book Clubs Bring Success to Black Authors
There are tons of articles and sites giving authors advice about how to get their work in the hands of readers. What a lot of them forget to mention is that readers get an author�s book in front of other readers.
There is more to selling books than social networking or buying ads on Facebook. Just like how the writing industry is changing, so has the world of promotion and publicity. Authors and publishers must rely on readers themselves in order to move books. No more is it enough to market to readers but they have to be involved in the bookselling process if a book is expected to get anywhere.
Word of mouth is the key for any author but especially important for minority authors, black included. Book clubs have been phenomenal in propelling a lot of black authors to success.
Authors must rely on readers to spread the word for us. You know why most people buy books? The number one reason? It�s because someone they know or trust told them the book was worth reading. That beats a Facebook ad or email blast every time.
Book clubs are the ticket when reaching loyal readers. Many readers rely on them and their reviews and they can be a writer�s best friend.
Now I know it isn�t easy to break into the book club market. You need to research as many clubs as you can find, learn the genres they support and get to know the members behind the clubs. You might not see fast sales but book clubs do more than just reaching buyers. They create a foundation for your future work as well as your current releases. Many book club members are members of several different clubs so if you reach out to them they will spread the word to every one of their clubs and you've gotten a mountain of exposure.
Book clubs are powerful because they are full of readers always hungry to find books. What�s great about black book clubs is that many wanna support black authors in any way they can so this is a valuable outlet for black authors to explore.
Whether you feel the book club scene is for you or not, you must have a solid plan to get your books in the hands of readers because without readers working hard along with you to sell books, it could be a tough road ahead.
