Women, Prayer And Menstruation

Women, Prayer And Menstruation
Menstruation is discussed in the Quran several times. The following two verses from the Quran make it very clear that menstruation is a normal function of a woman's body. In no way does it interfere with their duty to pray to God five times a day.

Chapter 2, verses 222-223
They ask you about menstruation, say, “It is harmful, you shall avoid sexual intercourse with the women during menstruation: do not approach them until they are rid of it. Once they are rid of it, you may have intercourse with them in the manner designed by God. God loves the repenters and He loves those who are clean.” Your women are the bearers of your seed. Thus, you may enjoy this privilege however you like, so long as you maintain righteousness. You shall observe God and know that you will meet Him. Give good news to the believers.

Nowhere in these two verses does God tell women not to pray. This is a message for the men. It is telling men to leave their menstruating women alone and not to have sex with them while they are bleeding.

Once menstruation has ceased men may have sex with their women ‘in the manner designed by God’, this means sex in the normal way, ‘your women are the bearers of your seed’. When God tells us, ‘He loves those who are clean’ it does not refer to the menstruation but the way sexual intercourse is performed. God perfectly designed one orifice for sexual intercourse.

Again, there is still no instruction for women to cease praying to God during menstruation. There is also no instruction in the Quran to cease fasting during Ramadan when menstruating either. So why do women not pray every day, five times a day as instructed by God in the Quran? Islam does not discriminate against women in prayers, they are equal to men.

The Quran gives us clear instructions, but people still go to other sources to make decisions about their personal lives. God leaves everything up to us to decide for ourselves, but He gives us guidelines on how to live a healthy, clean and happy life. Menstruation is not unclean; it is a natural process that happens to every female during a certain time in her life. It has nothing to do with Eve eating the apple and cursing women for all time. It is not a punishment from God because women are evil. It most certainly does not make us dirty, unclean creatures whose hands cannot touch food or whose bodies cannot pray before God and alongside men. It is a God given, natural process designed for the procreation of the human race and to say otherwise is idolatry. The words of men cannot supersede the words of God.

Prayer is food for the soul and only a well fed soul will be able to stand and face its creator on the Day of Judgment. God tells us to pray and nowhere in the Quran does God say ‘do not pray or fast during menstruation’. Why would women concede to pressure from other women and men to forsake their prayers? Implore God for guidance on this matter and He will guide you.

Chapter 40, verse 60
Your Lord says, “Implore Me, and I will respond to you, surely, those who are too arrogant to worship Me will enter Ghenna (Hell) forcibly.”
