Wedding Day Superstitions

Everyone knows about certain superstitions when it comes to weddings. For instance, it is bad luck for the groom to see the bride in her wedding gown before the ceremony and there is the whole “something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue”. But, I am willing to bet I have found a few that you may never have heard of. Especially wedding superstitions from other cultures.

THE WEDDING DRESS

Did you know that not only is it bad luck for the groom to see the bride in her wedding dress but it is also bad luck for the bride to wear the complete ensemble before she is ready to walk down the aisle? Doing this is said to lead to heartbreak and tragedy.

Did you know that according to English folklore, if a bride finds a spider in her wedding gown, it is supposed to bring the very best of luck to the bride?

It was the Romans who came up with the veil idea. The veil is supposed to hide the face of the bride, like a disguise or a mask, so that evil spirits do not recognize her and curse the happy bride and her union.

In Greek culture, if a bride puts a sugar cube in her sleeve, it is supposed to sweeten the marriage.

I remembered part of a poem about wedding dresses and had to look up the rest of it so here it is for all of you brides to be when you go out on your quest for the perfect gown:

Married in White, you have chosen right
Married in Grey, you will go far away,
Married in Black, you will wish yourself back,
Married in Red, you will wish yourself dead,
Married in Green, ashamed to be seen,
Married in Blue, you will always be true,
Married in Pearl, you will live in a whirl,
Married in Yellow, ashamed of your fellow,
Married in Brown, you will live in the town,
Married in Pink, your spirit will sink

There are a lot of wedding superstitions out there and I have only touched on a very small amount of them. There are superstitions about the wedding day itself, the wedding rings, and even more about the wedding dress. I will touch on the rest of them in future articles in the coming weeks.

In closing, I would just like to mention that you should remember that there are three rings to have when it comes to marriage:

The engagement ring, the wedding ring and the suffer-ring. Oh come on you laughed a little at that.

I wish all of the brides to be out there all the best and may your unions always be blessed.
