I can remember many years ago when I first became interested in working with angels. I wasn’t sure what to do to connect with them, so I just started talking to them, and asking for an angel who could guide me and fill me with wisdom and clarity. As I lay in bed one night, I asked an angel to visit me in my dreams. That night I dreamt that someone handed me a business card. As I looked at it, I could see a picture of an angel. I turned the card over, and only one word was printed on it: “Metatron.” In my dream, I can remember turning the card over and over and just looking at it.

The next morning I awoke, and very clearly remembered the dream. I had never heard the name before, so I got on the internet (which was still very new to me) and did a search. I only found one site that had anything to say at all about Metatron, and that was that he was a guide to those following a spiritual path. I thought that fit me perfectly, and I never looked back!

That was my very first experience with a specific angel.

Archangel Metatron is an angel of wisdom, song and prayer. He occupies the throne next to God and is known to be one of the tallest angels in all of Heaven.

The origins of his name are unclear. Some scholars say his name is derived from the Latin “Metator,” which means Guide, yet some teachers of Jewish lore state that it’s a Jewish word meaning “Little YHWH.” I can see where both of these actually make sense, firstly because Archangel Metatron is known to be a guide to those seeking to grow spiritually (he connects humankind to the Divine), and also because of his association with one of the ten Sephiroth, Kether (Crown), in Cabala.

It is said that Metatron is one of only two angels who was first human (the other angel is Sandalphon, who is considered a twin of Metatron). He was first the patriarch Enoch, and God transformed him when he chose him to be the Writer of Truth.

In modern days, Metatron seems to have a very strong association with children, and though ancient lore on this seems to be very minimal, current popularity probably has to do with the statement in the Talmud Abodah Zarah 3b, which says Metatron is the teacher of children who exited their earthly lives too early.

Some ancient lore has Metatron partnered with the Shekinah, who represents the female aspects of God. I have found this to be very comforting, because I believe it’s very important to see God as both masculine and feminine.

Metatron is also known as the Heavenly Scribe; he is the keeper of the Akashic Records, which are sometimes known as the Book of Life, in which all information about every soul is stored. He is also an angel of death, and works with Archangels Gabriel and Sammael to guide recently deceased souls back home into Paradise.

Archangel Metatron can be called upon when strength or courage is needed, and he can provide wisdom and guidance. He also acts as a guide into the Akashic Records, should we choose to access them. He is here to comfort us and bring truth into our hearts. He helps us to clear our minds and hearts of our past mistakes and resentments, and to walk the walk of a loving, forgiving and compassionate soul so that we may be of service to our fellow travelers.
