Growing up, my family grew a vegetable and herb garden in our backyard. The crisp crunch of fresh sweet peas off the vine is one of my fondest memories. As I grew older, fresh food seemed harder to come by and I heard so many conflicting opinions of what was a healthy diet and what wasnīt. To say the least, I was confused.
In 2008, I began studying yoga with my Guru, Bekir Algan, PhD. He taught an Iyengar based yoga practice based on principles of living in accordance with nature. During my apprenticeship with my Guru, I learned about Indiaīs traditional medical system, Ayurveda, a system that largely depends on healthy food choices to heal and prevent illness. I experimented with these principles and it changed my life. I was hooked on healthy foods.
With my devotion to eating the healthiest and freshest foods possible, and helping others do the same, I built and directed two community gardens in Salt Lake City, Utah. One was the first urban garden in downtown Salt Lake City and the other was a 1.5 acre vegetable garden built with the intention of helping refugees grow healthy food for their families.
As a writer, I have contributed to livestrong.com, ehow.com, bodysake.com and Outdoor Utah Adventure Journal covering topics related to healthy foods and yoga.
I also teach hot yoga, restorative yoga, yoga for the seasons and childrenīs yoga. I reside in the beautiful Pacific Northwest with my dog Atticus and my husband to be.
