2009 Oscars Not Many Surprises  Despite its off-putting title, Slumdog Millionaire deserves its Oscar win as Best Picture. Too bad Best Actor couldnīt have gone to two men this year: Frank Langellaīs performance as Richard Nixon is every bit as spectacular as Sean Pennīs as Harvey Milk. A Simple Twist of Fate (1994)  Steve Martin does an exceptionally clever job of modernizing George Eliot's novel Silas Marner. It's the fault of our bankrupt modern culture that in doing so he strips the original story of its morality. Author! Author! Some fans of the TV series have panned the new X-Files film, but it deserves a fair viewing. The Scully/Mulder magic is still there. The Best Years of Our Lives Still Timely  It may be sixty years old, but The Best Years of Our Lives is a long way from being out-of-date. A must see for everyone, especially families of returning veterans. The Sea Within (2004)  Anyone who saw Javier Bardem as an implacable killer in No Country for Old Men will be blown away by his performance as a lovable, long-suffering quadriplegic in this Spanish film. (2008), Oliver Stone's 2-Hour Lampoon  Josh Brolin and Oliver Stone say they wanted to "humanize" the 43rd President in the biopic W. All they succeed in doing is to reinforce the image of George W.
