Alaska Native Heritage  November is Alaska Native Heritage Month. It is one month a year dedicated to focusing on the heritage, contributions, hardships, and lifestyle of the natives of Alaska. Alaska Native Ways - Book Review  Alaska Native Ways,What the Elders Have Taught Us, is an incredible read about some of the traditions, lifestyles and ways of Native life in Alaska. Natives of Alaska  Before the times of cruise ships, airplanes, and tourists, there were a people who lived in, and with respect of, this great land. There are 218 federally recognized tribes in Alaska! The Potlatch Ceremony  The Potlatch is a very important ceremony for the native groups in Alaska. It was given for any number of reasons including; death in family, naming of children, raising totem poles, or building and blessing of new homes. The World Eskimo-Indian Olympics  As athletes around the world gear up for competition in the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing, another kind of competition takes place in Fairbanks, Alaska: the 47th annual World Eskimo-Indian Olympics. Totem Poles  It’s tough being low man on the totem pole. Or is it? Depending on the tradition of the native carving a particular pole, the bottom image may in fact be the most important. And not a man! The Inside Passage Region of Alaska is a great area for discovering the significance and beauty of totem poles.
