Imaginary Friend

Christine Catalano

You are with me, dream-walking through twilight woods.
Leaves scatter before us in the breeze.
Your soundless steps leave no footprints;
I carry you in my pockets, in my memories.
My plans include you.

I sense you best in darkness.
Your breathing matches mine.
The air stirs, something moves, darker than shadow.
The cat? Or is it you?
You can’t form the words to tell me.

I keep you close for one-sided conversation.
You don’t allow more.
Like an unanswered prayer you are flung into being.
Not manifested, but offering hope and possibility.
I take these greedily. Forgive me.
