Canicule

K L Ricks

Cerise eyelids and sunny skin
Pebbles burrowed in feet
Cool clumps of mud, crumbling
Sticky droplets on chin

Carnival stripes on the balcony
Red and yellow, red and yellow
Frosted bite of sprinkles
A concoction of sweat and glee

Prickling green and mauve florets
Bricks eroding, roaming dirt roads
Smell of hot gasoline
Swarms of beetles and bluebonnets
