Before Vietnam

Linda C. Anger

It rained the day we went
into the woods woven-
handed, both of us shy,
both of us dreaming,
both of us laughing
as we lay for hours,
skin-to-skin under
the thick pine tree,
the rain softened by
its massive boughs,
and even now, these
decades later, when we
chance upon each other,
we both recall the sweet
scent of the rain, the two of us
under that tree, so young,
so unaware of what
was to come.
