A Little Night Music

Valerie Austyn

As she lay in bed and listened
To the night song of insects whirring in the trees
Thoughts danced their way in the velvet dark
Across the spread like a slight summer breeze
Traversing space considered lost or dead
Caught somewhere between heart and head
Striking flint to create a sudden spark

Arid mindscapes cautiously explored
Long drought of inspirational rain
What once was revered, cherished, adored
Rediscovered,
Pen ready again

An old friendship re-kindled,
Imagination sprung free,
The muse re-awoken
Like a thunderous sea.
As she lay in bed and listened
To the night song in the trees

As she lay in bed and
Listened to the night song
As she lay in bed
And listened.
