The Climb

A.J. Huffman

Determination ferrets handholds from crevices
barely divisible from smooth stone. Curves
become footholds, ledged leverages of ascension.
Biceps burn with adrenaline and fatigue.
Muscle confusion ignored as sweat sweeps
expanse of skin. Heat sears shoulders
back to arid dunes. Tanned, they become
indistinguishable from the natural skyscraper
they ascend. Awkward angles and eroded
planes, the formidable giant growls aggressively,
but does not sway this modern-day Icarus.
Archaic wings of wax replaced
with ropes of kernmantle construction,
destination Sun is more than feasible,
quickly accomplished.
