Summer Sense

Gregory A. Kompes

Freshly tarred school roof
Summer pronouncement

Lazy afternoons, Marlboro
Smoke weaving through
green-leafed trees

Freedom bound on generationally
Shared bikes, soar—hands air raised

Fish-fouled rolling waves
Erie’s waters smash against
Time-worn wooden pier

Open doors/windows day/night
Small town trust, safety known

Rolling thunder announces
Lightning tainted, tornado
Dotted black skies

Ants scour blades of grass
Cicadas hum their summer song

Tomatoes flourish, Corn skyward
Dollar in the coffee can to feed from
Roadside farm stands along rolled hills

Cool mornings/muggy afternoons
Fresh cut grass, streetlight timers

Wire-perched birds, sunsets glorious
Solitude/friendship/potato salad
Tag, you’re always it

Classroom lists = summer’s death knoll
Capture lightning bugs one last time
