Corn Silk Hacienda

Joanne Cucinello

I´m lying here once again
in this forbidden maze
with corn silk clinging
to my hair ...
wondering.

Is this the life I want
hiding, waiting for
my red-skinned Mexican
to come as he promised
parting the tall husks of corn
searching for me
with those warm black eyes
making his way to our green hacienda
once again?

I am not free anymore
I think of him day and night
I am cursed!

Oh, to be like those clouds
light and carefree
white and sinless!

I close my eyes sometimes
and find myself
alone and floating
high above, sitting on
a wisp of white
looking down
at what might have been ...

if I´d never crossed that border!
