The Signs of Spring

A.J. Huffman

Pollen dancing on wind—
yellow mist of promise,
tomorrow’s kiss, landing, waiting
to be born again as petal, brush,
tree. A shift in temperament—
warmer air descending, a blanket
of energy, opening invisible arms
in welcome, a nudge to discard
shell-like coverings, to emerge
as butterfly with wings at the ready.
A dash of raindrops—
final blessing, tears of passage,
winter’s last dissolve, expunged
as gentle fingers, a stroking
of magic, molecules of iridescent blue
christening green.
