Reading Annie

Joann Grisetti

eyes bite into the page
fill a mouth ripening
a few letters dribble
they exit corners of sweetened lips
moist with juicy pulp
they puddle
a damp ring of fructose
on my vermillion shirt
the bees will locate
any minute
the remaining words
lingering, lounging, pleading
I take another paragraph
dirt eroding, I nibble
a morsel unsatisfied
until the covers close
over the final sentence
