Flew Away

Linda M. Crate

i fell into the tangerine sunset
of your smile
calming and gentle as a summer´s
breeze, inviting as the open
wings of a butterfly;
you invited me to prolong my visit to maine
and so i laid in all the orange lilies and friendly
daisies blowing in the breeze of your love
all seemed well—
but when winter came with all its ice and chill
it seemed to affect your soul
for the kindness in your blue eyes turned to something
sharp and arctic
you no longer seemed inviting,
but as distant as a mountain full of winter´s burdens;
i tried to burn you with the summer of my smile
my love could not touch you and so i
flew away before i withered and died.
