Summer at the Cape

Tara Lynne Brown

My mother buries herself
In an old Danielle Steel novel
Every summer
While my sister buries me in sand
On the Cape
It’s always a month after
The smell of spring
Has been singed from the earth
By the summer sun
And I know our vacation is almost over
When a man selling bananas
Trips over my shin in the sand
Where I’m buried up to my nose.
