Beate Sigriddaughter

Now, by the light of your name,
I can see what the moon does
with darkness: Nothing. She bows
her calm light into it
like an unfailing power,
claims her fullness, then
bows out again, still dancing
triumph and respect. Oh how much
shadow the earth
has to cast on her own self-
conscious path to make it seem
so. Nothing diminishes, nothing
increases, all the same
I live to see the play of light.
