The Badgerīs Song

Rich Persoff

Itīs been a good year, and quiet:
turning the soft earth,
all in the dark beneath,

Whenever, as much as I needed:
grubs, roots, the occasional
blind gopher pup;

Enough rain for easy digging,
not so much as to flood the burrow,
or the misery of a wet pelt.

Hearing the tractor teeth
rip deep in distant fields
I had time to tunnel deeper.

But Oh! The moonlight
on frosted fields!
