Flowers in the Dirt

Richard Schnap

It was raining the night he walked
Down streets past vacant buildings
To hear the music of a band
He was one of the few who liked

And it was raining the night he waited
For a bus that always came late
To take him to see the drawings
Of an artist that rarely sold

And it was raining the night he sat
In the back of an empty coffeehouse
To listen to a poet speak
About a world only some cared to know

But it was sunny the day he saw
A child dancing down a sidewalk
Like a creature who’d never been tamed
Who didn’t mind what people thought
