My Super Ex-Girlfriend

What would happen if you dated a superhero and then tried to break things off with them? This is what happens to Matt Saunders (Wilson). Matt hasn’t exactly had the best luck when it comes to relationships. But when he gets up enough courage to talk to Jenny Johnson (Thurman) on the subway and eventually “saves her purse” after it’s stolen, things begin to take a different turn for him.
It doesn’t take long, however, for Matt to realize that Jenny isn’t the mousey, art gallery owner that she presents herself to be. Jenny finally confesses to Matt that she’s much more. She’s none other than G-Girl, the popular superhero who seems to save the city everyday from one catastrophe or another.
Matt doesn’t have a problem with Jenny’s secret identity until he starts to see firsthand how jealous and obsessive she can be, particularly when it comes to his friend/co-worker Hannah (Faris). He ultimately decides to call it quits with Jenny. Wrong move! Matt now has to endure the vengeful wrath of G-Girl, who has focused all of her energy on making his life miserable. Besides having his car taken (he later finds it orbiting the Earth) and losing his job after finding himself sans clothes during a meeting, Matt also gets a scary wake-up call one morning when G-Girl tosses a live shark into his apartment. It’s apparent she didn’t take the break-up too well!
As his last resort (and in order to keep his sanity), Matt enlists the help of Professor Bedlam (Izzard), who shares a common past with the renowned G-Girl and knows how to zap the superhero of her powers. Who will ultimately win this battle? You’ll have to watch “My Super Ex-Girlfriend” to find out!
This is one of those movies that you wanted to really like. While it’s fun in some parts, I think somehow it ends up falling a little flat.
The “superhero who shows her vengeful side” was a great premise, I thought. How often do we get to see a “superhero gone bad” movie? The movie was also campy at some points and was reminiscent of the old “Superman” films in some areas (ie, the thinly veiled disguise and G-Girl and Matt flying above the city at night).
There were two action scenes that I thought were fun. The first is the “shark attack” in Matt’s apartment. I’m sure that’s something you don’t want to wake up to. The other is the battle between G-Girl and Hannah.
One of the things that detracted from the movie was predictability. As soon as we hear about Bedlam’s past with G-Girl, we can pretty much guess where the story is going from there. It would have also been nice to know where she got the G-Girl moniker!
