Copywriting is one of the most sought after freelance writing abilities. However, today some can also be hired by companies to work in house, so to speak, on their own material. Copywriters primarily write copy that is concise, and moves people to action if it is a marketing piece, or helps people understand something about a company or product.

A copywriter must be creative and disciplined in their ability to write in very few words something that has a large meaning. “Just Do It,” the Nike slogan is a wonderful example. Their slogan encompases a lot of meaning within a few short words.

You have to want to learn to engage people and move them to action in your writing if you want to succeed. As a freelancer, you can find a lot of jobs as this skill is in high demand today. You can write advertising copy, book promo copy, brochures, leaflets and the like. If you are good with turning a phrase and have a great attention to detail, and know what people want and will react to, this is a good place to start or continue your career.

There are many courses online, as well as in community colleges and universities that can help you learn the skills you need to succeed here. You can also study ads and find what you like and don't like to help you get a feel for the area you might want to specialize in. Even though a copywriter can command a good income, you must be willing to work hard. Deadlines are a crucial thing you must be able to meet.

Many writers do some form of copywriting to earn a good income while they learn to hone their full writing abilities in another genre. Some use it to moonlight and earn a little extra money while raising a family. Still more people find a love of copywriting and stay in that field their entire career.
