Sometimes, you just need to relax and read a good book. How about sitting down and reading a novel about gaining wealth, losing wealth and starting all over again. The Summer Kitchen is an interesting read about a strong woman who loses everything financially and yet, gains so much personally.
New author Karen Weinreb writes a well-told novel about how the super-wealthy wives of Wall Street live, think and handle financial ruin. It is a look into a world that most of us will never know nor understand. I found this book hard to put down and read it cover to cover in two days. The Summer Kitchen is definitely a story of our times – Wall Street corruption, financial collapse and how the women and families that are left behind go forward without the income and security they had come to depend on. This is a story of a young wife and mother who is determined to survive and in even thrive in the face of tragedy, loss and humiliation.
This is the story of Nora Banks who lives through a personal and financial nightmare. Her husband is convicted of Wall Street theft and she loses everything. Everything that is, except her will and determination to survive.
What makes this novel even more fascinating is that it is based closely on the real-life happenings of the author Karen Weinrub. The author’s own husband was incarcerated for a white-collar crime. It’s fascinating to have an insider’s emotional perspective and point of view woven into the story.
What does this fictional story have to do with Abundance and Wealth? It is a fascinating look into the lifestyle and mind of the ultra rich and famous. But even better, it is the story of how a financially and emotionally betrayed wife literally picks herself up out of financial ruin and makes a life for her family. It is the story of how Nora kept her family together, her emotional sanity intact and is able to use her own talent and tenacity to make a financially strong and stable life for her children, herself and her friends.

I truly enjoy stories about strong women – Nora Banks is a strong woman. To be emotionally and financially betrayed by her husband was a shocking blow to her lifestyle, her self-esteem and to the welfare of her small children. Nora stepped up to the challenge and found ways to use her natural gifts, talents and passion for baking to become a role model for women facing financial adversity.
The Summer Kitchen is a novel about learning how to discover your talents and strengths personally, professionally and financially. Faced with tragedy and at the crossroads of survival, the main character Nora Banks discovered an inner strength that had been forgotten during her marriage. As a dutiful wife and mother enjoying a lifestyle of the wealthy, she became more and more dependent on her husband’s position and money. When on her own, her natural talents and strengths blossomed and flourished. Because of tragedy, Nora became a role model for her children, friends and other women in the community.
At times, the book could go into too much detail about the gossiping and the superficial back stabbing lifestyle of the ultra-wealthy community of Bedford, NY. But in all honesty, that was the only negative I found in this well written story.
