Gunslinger Girl

Gunslinger Girl
Gunslinger Girl is an anime series based on the manga by Yu Aida.

Gunslinger Girl is set in modern-day Italy, and focuses on the Social Welfare Agency. While the agency is billed as a charitable institution sponsored by the Italian government that aids the rehabilitation of the physically injured, it's actually a surveillance and intelligence-gathering division. The Special Ops has two sections, and the second utilizes young girls with cybernetic implants who have been brainwashed as its agents. Each girl has a male trainer, who is usually referred to as her "handler," and together they are referred to as a fratello; "fratello" is the Italian word for brother. The handler is responsible for the training, welfare and field performance of his agent.

The main girl who is focused on is named Henrietta; she was assaulted and left for dead when her family was murdered. Her handler is Jose Croce, and he does not believe in treating the girls simply as tools of vengeance. Henrietta is very attached to Jose, and even becomes jealous if she thinks Jose is paying more attention to other women.

Rico was born with severe birth defects, and was signed over to the Social Welfare Agency by her parents on her 11th birthday. She has a happy disposition, and appears to be the only one of the girls to have a clear memory of her life before becoming part of the SWA.

Triela is from Tunisia, but was kidnapped and smuggled to Amsterdam by the Mafia. She was assaulted during the taping of a snuff film, and was rescued by Victor Hilshire. Victor took her to the SWA for treatment, but Triela was converted into a cyborg without his knowledge. She is the second oldest of the cyborgs and serves as a kind of mentor to the other girls.

Claes is a cyborg who is confined to the Agency after the death of her handler, Raballo. It is unknown how she came to the SWA, and she is used as a test subject by the cyborg engineers through controlled situations. Angelica was the first girl converted into a cyborg after she was almost killed in a hit-and-run staged by her father in order to collect the life insurance he had on her.

Due to the concept of the series, Gunslinger Girl is rather violent, and some blood is seen when people are shot. FUNimation has rated this series as TV-14. Personally, I would recommend Gunslinger Girl to anime viewers who are 16 or 17 years of age and older.
