Review Of I Am The Face Website
I found a new miscarriage and infant loss website today. It's called “I Am The Face”. In addition to the resources featuring general information about pregnancy and infant loss, the site is attempting to raise awareness about pregnancy and infant loss by posting pictures of moms (and dads) who have experienced pregnancy or infant loss.
Before I had my miscarriages and lost my daughter, I really felt like these losses were things that happened to other people. I hadn't experienced them myself and initially had no close friends or family who had either. I was basically oblivious. However, pictures of actual people can be a powerful tool for understanding how these losses affect people. Seeing a person's photo and knowing that person lost a baby is a much more personal than simply reading a statistic. The site has a 2000 faces campaign which is encouraging people to post their photos and tell their stories. The 2000 is in recognition of the 2000 women who lose their babies in the United States every day.
The site also integrates with social media like Twitter and Facebook. In fact, people are encouraged to use the site's graphic as their user profile picture. The image shows four hearts, three of which are white and one which is pink, blue or pink and blue. The fourth heart is for the approximately 25% rate of pregnancy and infant loss.
I love that this site is interactive and gives you some easy options for getting involved. They accept donations to go toward raising awareness of pregnancy and infant loss and you can donate in amounts as small as $1. This is great for people who may be inspired to help but feel pinched by this tight economy.
The site includes a nice online store with t-shirts, hoodies and buttons. There are also items for supporters of the cause who may not have experienced a miscarriage themselves. The site encourages people who are friends with medical professionals to ask them to wear supporter buttons.
I like their tagline too. I have a pregnancy and infant loss bumper sticker on my car which no one ever asks me about. But coming right out and saying “I am the face” is a lot more in your face and hopefully discussion provoking. I would definitely recommend checking this site out.
