Book Review Write Starts
Prompts, Quotes, and Exercises to Jumpstart Your Creativity by Hal Zina Bennett

I received “Write Starts” from New World Library, and honestly my first thought was “I don’t need any help jumpstarting my creativity.”

Then I had to laugh. How many times had I found myself sitting in front of my computer wondering where to start!

So I opened the book and started at page one!

From the very beginning, I have enjoyed reading this book; Hal’s writing is easy and flowing, and the writing exercises are very creative, easy to follow, and inspiring.

There are 51 chapters, and I found that each and every chapter had something to offer me; and in some way I improved my own writing each time I read (and did) one of Hal’s exercises. There is also a section on internet recourses for writers, and some notes pages for personal notes.

I used “Write Starts” to kick start my own creativity writing here at BellaOnline, my own personal blog, and two different writing projects I’m currently working on. I had been going through a move, the loss of a beloved pet, and the stress of my mother dealing with knee surgery, and I honestly felt that my muse had had enough of my stress and abandoned me for more creative pastures. But after flipping through the book, and doing the exercises, I began to feel like my old self.

I am also a person who loves to journal. My favorite time of day is early in the morning when I take my tea and sit on the patio to write. But you can imagine how disappointing it can be sometimes to have such a beautiful, nurturing creative space, yet nothing wants to flow from the pen! As I find journaling to be a very healing process, I don’t want to waste my mornings writing “I don’t know what to write!” The quotes and inspirations from this book were very helpful to my morning journaling experience.

I really believe that the exercises in this book could help anyone experiencing writer’s block, along with being a terrific inspiration for someone who wanted to become a writer, and didn’t know where to start.

So whether you are a closet writer or a professional, a student, or a blogger, I would highly recommend “Write Starts” to help you get that creative edge.

To express something from our soul through the practice of writing is a gift. But sometimes that gift can be suppressed by the challenges and stresses of daily life. “Write Starts” help you to overcome those challenges, release your muse, and give voice to your soul through the art of writing.
