Can You Train Your Mate?
Is there a difference between training people and training pets?
Of late there is a lot of talk about “whisperer training.” I first heard the term when read the book “The Horse Whisperer” years ago, I later saw the movie by the same name. I recently read an article in one of my woman's magazines asking why not train your husband like you do your pet. Of course this could work on wives too.
I offer my tongue in-cheek observations on this perplexing issue.
The question is, can you train your human loved one the way you do your fur babies? Maybe you can. Give them treats or compliments when they do what you ask (or tell) them to do, mete out appropriate punishment when they don’t. Take privileges away when they misbehave, etc.
Get your loved one to come to you by pressing the lever on the electric can opener or shaking a package of donuts, you make have to open the box and let the aroma waft towards your subject. But you can see how this could work. Men, get your wives attention by holding up something shiny or sparkly; I love that one, jewelry comes to mind. We won’t go into bathroom training, but dirty towels do belong in the hamper and watching your aim is most important.
If your sweetie walks around the house late at night getting into stuff and snacking inappropriately, tire him or her out during the day by playing Frisbee in the yard, or going for a long drive. Fresh air does wonders for relaxing the mind and body.
You should know none of this is new, there is an old movie starring Sandra Dee and Bobby Darin titled “If a Man Answers” This is one of those frothy comedies made in 60’s, this one was made 1962. Sandra Dee’s photographer husband won’t act right, he just will not do what his wife considers the right and proper thing. Dee tells her mom about her predicament and the fun begins with a present from mommy, a dog training book and a couple of white lies.
Can you really train your family the way you train your animals? Maybe. If you are starting to feel like you are being trained, perhaps you are. As always there is a caveat, know that most cats ignore rules, regulations and training.
