Quilters can benefit from the science of color theory. When using this knowledge our quilts can be much more stunning.

The series Color Theory for Quilters has been written by me, in order to help quilters to better understand the use of Color in Quilting. This series consists of a number of separate articles, each explaining a certain element in the theory of color for quilters.
It is my intention of this particular article to set down a “road map” of sorts, so that the reader is able to move through the series of articles in a chronological order that helps to build on knowledge previously gained.
The first article I would recommend is the basic theory of the color wheel. The color wheel is an enormously helpful tool that quilters can use. Although the wheel is also used by artists and the like, the same theory applies to any designers.
So this is the article I recommend that you read first:
The Color Wheel
This is the first in a series of articles on the use of color in quilts. Comprehensive instructions are included for reading the color wheel, and applying the scientific methods in developing new and creative color schemes for today’s quilts.
After Color Theory for Quilters – The Color Wheel I continue the series by talking about the variations of the pure colors found on the color wheel. The first variation is the Tints and following is the link to the article on Tints:
Tints
Next up is the Tones – another variation of pure color. Here’s the link to that article:
Tones
The last of the variations of pure colors is the Shades. Here’s the link to that article:
Shades
There will be more articles to come. Watch this space!
As a sideline to the Color Theory for Quilters, I’m including a number of articles that you might find interesting. I examine particular colors and how they can be used in the specific design genre of quilting.
The first is Quilting with Yellow. Here’s the link to that article.
The Color Yellow in Qulting
I will be adding more articles over time, so please come back and check on the updates. I will also notify you of new articles through the weekly newsletter. If you would like to subscribe to the weekly newsletter, here’s the link:
