Texas Bluegill or Bream Fishing

Texas bluegill fishing is taken up by fishermen young and old mainly during the warm spring and summer months. Since bluegill like the shallow waters near the banks of rivers and streams, they can be caught by rookie fishermen. Bluegills are found all over the state of Texas, with three main subspecies spreading out in different locations.

Areas of Texas

Bluegills, sometimes called bream, can be found all over Texas with three main subspecies inhabiting different areas of the state. In the northeastern part of the state, Lepomis macrochirus macrochirus can be found. Lepomis macrochirus speciosus is found in the western and central parts of the state. While the Lepomis macrochirus purpurescens is an Atlantic Coast native, it can be found all across Texas.

Texas Rules & Regulations for Bluegill

Any resident, non-resident or visitor of Texas over 17 years of age must possess a license to fish for bluegill or any other fish. Fishing licenses can be purchased online and from local stores. For those who only fish one or two times a year, a special one-day all-water fishing license can be purchased.

In the state of Texas, the bluegill, a species of sunfish, has no daily bag limits. Since there is no minimum size requirement either, smaller bluegill can be caught and kept by younger fishermen.

Resources and Books

For more information, visit the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. There is fishing and boating information, state park destinations for fishing trips, and event calendars. Also, try reading a book all about bluegill, like the ones below.
