The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Haruhi Suzumiya is the main character of the series, but the story is narrated by her classmate, Kyon. At the beginning of the series, Haruhi starts a new school club called the SOS Brigade, and forces Kyon to be a member. Haruhi is energetic and eccentric, and is viewed by many of her classmates as an oddball. Haruhi can't stand boredom, so she's always coming up with things for the SOS Brigade to do.
Kyon is the "normal" member of the club. Haruhi's demands tend to annoy him, but he is also bewildered by her. In the series, it is hinted that Kyon has romantic feelings toward Haruhi.
Yuki Nagato is the next person recruited for the SOS Brigade. She is rather quiet, but can speak at length if it's needed. Yuki seems to be engrossed in her reading, although when asked about what she's reading, Yuki will say that she is only slightly interested in her book.
Haruhi drags Mikuru Asahina into the SOS Brigade. Mikuru is one of the older members of the club, and she is a soft-spoken girl that Haruhi enjoys dressing up like a doll. Kyon will often look at Mikuru and comment on how she looks, which makes Haruhi jealous.
Itsuki Kouzumi is the final member recruited for the SOS Brigade, and is the only other male besides Kyon in the club. As the series progresses, it is revealed that all of club members (except for Kyon) have hidden abilities.
While the characters in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya may have a "cute" look to them, the series isn't being aimed at a younger audience. Some of the content is a little too "mature" for younger viewers. For example, in the first episode of the series, Haruhi is shown grabbing at Mikuru's breasts to point out how much bigger they are compared to hers.
Personally, I would recommend The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya to anime viewers who are 15 or 16 years of age and older.
