Blood+
Blood+ is an anime series inspired by the film, Blood: The Last Vampire, but there are only a few allusions and basic elements from the film included in the series.
The main character of the series is a girl named Saya Otonashi, who has been living as an anemic and amnesiac with her adoptive family. She lives the life of a normal schoolgirl until she is attacked by a creature called a chiropeteran. Chiropterans are bat-like creatures that feed on human blood, and possess extraordinary speed, strength, and healing abilities. As she is attacked by the creature, some of her memory returns. She also learns she is the only one who can defeat the creature.
It turns out Saya was born in 1833, and survives on the blood of others. It was destined for her to destroy chiropterans and her twin sister, Diva. Saya is under the protection of an organization called Red Shield, which is dedicated to killing Diva and the chiropterans. It is through Hagi, Saya's living chevalier, that Saya begins to learn the truth about herself and who she really is. A chevalier is the second highest level of chiropterans when it comes to strength and ability. A powerful bond exists between the chevalier and the "queen" that sired them. In this case, Saya was the "queen" who unwittingly turned Hagi into a chevalier in the late 1800s.
Over the course of the series, Saya visits locations across the world to fight the chiropterans with her katana, and to search for her origins. She is joined in this quest by Kai, her adopted "elder" brother, as well as by David (a member of Red Shield whose father was a victim of Saya's during an incident in Vietnam).
With a title like Blood+, it should be expected that the series contains a bit of blood and violence. After watching the first episode, I could tell that the series lived up to this expectation. Blood+ is a series that is definitely not being aimed at a younger audience. With the blood, violence, concepts, and plot included in Blood+, I would personally recommend this series for anime viewers who are 16 or 17 years of age and older.
