It's Frizzy Hair Weather
Learning to care for their frizzy hair is sometimes a life-long process. It means trying out every new product that appears on the market to find the ones that work for your hair. Reading labels, advice from your hairdresser and experimenting will help you decide which products will work best for you.
Care for frizzy hair starts with the shampoo. When choosing a shampoo and conditioner, look for the words smoothing, moisturizing or hydrating. These products will contain emollients to smooth the hair shaft and offer more control during styling.
After the shampoo and conditioning, gently towel blot. Vigorous rubbing will encourage frizz.
Next apply one or more of the many smoothing products you will find in the stores and salons. I like to start with serum or leave-in conditioner.
Smoothing serums and frizz serums aid in smoothing the hair but usually do not offer the holding quality of other products. Some of these are light in weight and can be used alone on hair that gets frizzy but becomes overly limp with more product. Others are heavy in nature and aid in controlling hair with too much body. The heavier product should be used sparingly until you have experience in its effect on your type of hair. Serums are most often applied to wet hair.
The next step is to apply a product for hold.
Gels offer the maximum in hold and are usually better at relieving frizz than a mousse.
Read the labels; there are gels, such as Nioxin Pure Shine Gel, that control frizz but do not offer the hold factor that is normally found in gels. This means soft, smooth control without adding extra body.
You may want to layer several of these products to customize your frizz control.
Styling:
While drying your hair, you will want to exercise control over it. Allowing it to blow in the wind of the blow dryer will increase your work later. Concentrate on small areas and work slowly. I have found that a round brush with lots of ‘teeth’ or a boar-bristle brush works best to smooth out short to medium length hair, leaving it with a healthy shine. Using a paddle brush or wide flat brush with many short bristles is very helpful for long hair.
Make sure the hair is completely dry. Any moisture in the hair will cause it to revert to its frizzy texture. You may use several tools to finish your style. A 1 ½ inch curling iron or larger will smooth out left over unruliness and give it shape. A flat or straightening iron will add the finishing touches. (When using and heated utensils, use products that are labeled ‘heat protectant or for thermal styling.’ )
When your hair is completely dry and styled, further smoothing and styling options are offered by pomades hair waxes and hair creams.
Finish with humidity fighting hair spray. If you don’t care for the hair sprayed feel, spray lightly and brush through your hair. You will get he protection without the hold.
