Portable Sleeve Review for Laptop Bloggers

Guest Author - Jill Florio

My Dell XPS laptop runs extremely hot - so hot that I am shocked I have not accidentally burned it out long ago. I am constantly propping it up on things to allow air to circulate under it, and can't set it on my lap at all. Enter the Philips Notebook Sleeve with Heat Protect.

Protect your Lap and and your Laptop when Blogging

I was thrilled to find this product for my mobile blogging! I was very hopeful it would helpfully suck all the heat out from under my blazing hot laptop. The product arrived quickly from Amazon, in a simple plastic bag with a cardboard sleeve around it. A small card minimally described its cooling properties.

The notebook sleeve itself is on the small side - smaller than my laptop. This is fine, since that leaves more room underneath for air to circulate, and it's still large enough to be steady. The cushioned bottom of the notebook sleeve is soft enough to be comfortable perching on my lap.

The top, where the laptop sits, is more fabric-ey than I'd expected and has one little plastic/aluminum band for heat dispersal. I was worried about the fabric/foam layer on the top portion. The info card provided with the sleeve asserts that the topmost rigid foam surface and middle layer of aluminum do the job of providing air and dispersing heat.

Does the Heat Protection Work?

In execution, the notebook sleeve does what it sets out to do - which is be comfortable on my lap and keep my laptop from building up too much heat. Unfortunately, it's still not enough for my very, very hot laptop. My *lap* stays comfortable but the heat still builds up in my laptop.

Things are better WITH the notebook sleeve than they are without it, but my laptop is still in danger of crashing with every casual use.

Decent Design for Bloggers on the Go

I do appreciate the thoughtful inner pockets and (flimsy) handle for storing papers and small desk supplies. One can actually set up the sleeve as a tiny, mobile mini-office. One product that multi-tasks! I appreciate smart design like this. I can go out and about with my reference papers, a pen, Flash drive, a mini-stapler, my laptop cord, and some Post-It notes.

Ultimately, if you own a laptop that runs normally, the Phillips notebook sleeve will be the perfect answer, making a great mini-desk for your computer and keeping both your legs and your electronics cool. Be warned that if your laptop runs extra hot, this sleeve simply won't be enough.

Here is the Heat Protect Sleeve, offered on Amazon.com:
