Yarns at the Adobe
California isn’t generally thought of as knitting heaven, and it can be hard to find local yarn stores that cater to the climate and demand. On California’s Central Coast, the smaller population means that it can be difficult to find anything rather than craft yarn at a big box store. Thankfully, there are local entrepreneurs willing to take on the challenge and provide a home for the knitters and crocheters in the area. When you travel here, be sure to stop in at stores like Yarns at the Adobe in San Luis Obispo, and help support independent business people as well as crafters from all climates.
Most yarn stores are small these days, and Yarn at the Adobe is no exception. The one-room shop, however, packs in a great deal of yarn, notions, patterns, and inspiration for the knitter! Whether you’re looking to make that next great sweater or simply want to check out the latest in magazines, you’ll find it here.
Located across the street from the San Luis Obispo Mission, this store carries a vast selection of brands. You’ll find many of the ‘workhouse’ yarns here, including Berroco and Debbie Bliss, but why not branch out and try something new? Local choices include yarn from Drop Spindle, Heather Bloom, and Valkerie. Or, if you’re in the mood for something unusual, check out the selection from Habu Textiles or the incredible hand-dyed selection from Mountain Colors. The displays are set up to resemble someone’s living room, with yarn overflowing onto tables and chairs. Browsing is encouraged, and you can happily while away an afternoon here just checking out the latest offerings.
The selection of printed materials is small, no doubt reflecting the availability of items on amazon.com. However, one can find individual patterns as well as a smattering of the latest magazine offerings. There’s also a reasonable selection of notions, and you’ll also be able to find a specific needle to match your choice of yarn.
The store is open from 11a on every day with the exception of Tuesdays, and closes at 6p unless it’s one of the Thursdays where crocheters gather to craft and chat. Classes are offered as interest rises, so if you’re looking for instruction, be sure to ask. The owner, Anne Gough, is glad to be of help!
