The Secret of Christmas
There is something very special about the holiday time of year. Our thoughts are filled with tinsel, family gatherings, caroling in the snow, and chestnuts roasting over an open fire. There is a feeling that infuses us with peace, hope and excitement, but this feeling seems to vanish throughout the rest of the year.
What special quality does this time of year carry that manages to fill every heart and mind to overflowing with hope and love?
Therefore as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Colossians 3:12
Sometimes in the rush of our daily lives, we can forget why we are really here. We aren’t here just to work, raise families, eat, sleep and get through each day, moment by moment.
During the holidays we remember that we are here to share ourselves; our compassion and understanding, with our fellow man. We are here to make the world a better place through our actions, and our interactions. We are here to be an example and a loving presence.
Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. ~ Colossians 3:13
But sometimes we are so hurt and angered, that it’s impossible be a loving example.
Sometimes people do things that intentionally hurt us. Other times they hurt us, and may never even know it. However, if we hold thoughts of revenge or retribution, we are filling our own hearts with hatred. And no act of vengeance can ever heal our heart! Only by forgiving can we release the hatred we have stored up inside of us. Only through forgiveness can we truly experience love.
Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. ~ Colossians 3:15
Through forgiveness and gratitude our spirits are filled with peace. And perhaps because this sacred time of year represents the birth of the sacred, it is easier for us to tap into that loving energy.
But we can carry this spirit with us throughout the year. The secret of Christmas is not just what we do to show love and compassion during the holidays. It’s how we can carry that spirit with us throughout the year by remembering that we are one with each other, and we are here to love and radiate the peace of the Christ that resides within us, always.
