New Euphorbias for 2010
What better way to start off the new decade than with some new plants for the garden? A number of new euphorbia varieties are being introduced this year. Here are details on some of those.
These new annual euphorbias are somewhat similar to the Diamond Frost, which was introduced several years ago. Diamond Frost is a Proven Winner annual that has received numerous awards. It was named the U.K. Plant of the Year.
Breathless Series
Euphorbia Breathless Blush is destined to be the most popular plant of the new year. In fact, Breathless is a new series called Breathless. Two colors are being introduced for 2010. These include Blush as well as White. Blush is noted for the deep red-tinged foliage. This variety is particularly floriferous. It is named for the white flowers that are decorated with pale pink bracts. Blush reaches about a foot in height and is around two feet across.
Breathless White is a highly branched, sturdy looking plant that is slightly larger than Blush. This one is 1¼ feet in height and around 2¼ feet across. This tends to be freely branching—more so than Blush.
All of the Breathless series plants have a mounding, very full growth habit. There is no need to deadhead. The dried blossoms drop off, leaving a neater looking plant. Blooming throughout the summer the Breathless plants can take the heat. Blush is considered the most versatile as it will tolerate most
any kind of conditions during the summer.
This series is grown as fast growing annuals. They’re suitable for flower beds and borders as well as container gardens. The Breathless series is part of the Simple Beautiful brand of plants.
These plants can withstand dry soil, but will need watering occasionally. They tend to be easy, carefree plants that require little attention. They’re quick growing and have very fine textured foliage and delicate looking blooms.
Euphorbia White Hip Hop
This is a new annual for containers and garden beds. It is a dense plant with a mounded growth habit. Hip Hop has fresh, attractive green leaves. It blooms non-stop throughout the summer. The small bracts are white. This variety is known to tolerate drought and heat very well. Grown as an annual, this is an ideal choice for mixed container gardens as well as for flower beds and borders.
Euphorbia White Manaus
This new variety received numerous awards during plant trials around the country in 2009. This new introduction is one of the taller and more vigorous varieties of the new annual euphorbias. This is a self cleaning variety that remains neat looking throughout the growing season.
