Before reading a book I take a good look at the cover, I found the cover of America, Welcome to the Poorhouse: interesting and a bit frightening. It appears that Uncle Sam is holding one of those signs we see in old black and white 1940’s films where people are carrying signs with heartbreaking “Will work for food” messages, or something similar. The back cover shows a piece of cardboard stating “Too many Americans are racing toward financial catastrophe!” OK--I received the ‘Going to hell in a handbasket’ message loud and clear without opening the book. That is certainly one way to get anyone’s attention. This book held mine from beginning to end.

Author Jane White, is a former syndicated personal finance columnist for Gannette News Service, and founder and President of Retirement Solutions, LLC. Her company provides investment education. In America, Welcome to the Poorhouse: What You Must Do to Protect Your Financial Future and the Reform We Need, Ms. White provides investment advice and financial guidance that you can understand. She also brings very definite opinions and political views about government and other powers along with her advice. But that is not necessarily a bad thing, because she gives the reader facts, figures and endnotes as well. The truth is she offers darn good financial advice. She shoots straight from the hip and talks about what many of us are wondering; how and if we can recover from this financial mess.

Ms. White cautions Americans about credit card debt. She says that we are “swimming in credit debt.” I say ‘Amen’ to that statement. Some of her salient advice is to “cut “junk spending,” pay bills on time, don’t use equity loans to buy a car, avoid long-term car loans and leasing and steer clear of unsecured debt.” She covers our worries about retirement and retirement living, home and mortgages, rising college costs and more. This is a must-read book for anyone concerned about their financial future. Jane White gives solid advice on what we can to protect our money and holdings.
