Christmas Carol Special Edition - Book Review

Christmas Carol Special Edition - Book Review
Most of us know the story – if only from one of the many films based on the Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Before I picked up this book I had not read the 1843 classic. Everything that I remembered of the storyline came from the 1970 musical “Scrooge” starring Albert Finney and a few of the more recent films.

As the Dickens’ story begins, a miserly old man, Ebenezer Scrooge, is visited by his equally miserly, now departed, business partner, Jacob Marley. Marley has returned from the grave with a message for Scrooge that will force him to look at his life and ultimately change it forever. That night Scrooge will be visited by three spirits who will take him on journeys into a past Christmas, the present day Christmas and into his potential future. Through these visitations, Scrooge feels regret for his actions, experiences repentance, and learns that there is redemption when he finds that he has not missed Christmas day and still has time to change his greedy ways.

A Christmas Carol Special Edition is a Bible study of the classic tale. This is not your ordinary Bible study. This book contains the complete text of the original Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol. Short commentary throughout the book offers insights into Charles Dickens’ faith as well as the story’s biblical imagery and the Christian themes developed in the story.

After each chapter, or stave, there are a few pages of questions designed for group study. The questions are meant to promote discussion within groups of readers of all ages. The first group of questions concerns the Dickens story. The second group concerns personal thoughts of the reader, and the third concerns the biblical story of Christmas.

There is a key Bible verse for each area of discussion as well as a list of Bible verses for further study.

I enjoyed reading A Christmas Carol in Charles Dickens’ own words and appreciated the accompanying commentary since many of the expressions from 1843 are unfamiliar to the modern day reader. I recommend this book for family or any small group as a short, light and fun book study during the holiday season.
