Hockey's Cutest Players
This is such an important subject that there was no question it needed to be tackled – or so suggested a female friend when potential topics for a hockey column were mentioned. Thus, without further ado, the results below are of the highest (un)scientific polling methods available. No stone was left unturned, as the question was put forth to the multitudes via the Internet and in person.
Drum roll please. Many players were mentioned, but the ones that follow consistently made the list. Recently retired players were also included.
Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins may be the best player in hockey and now he’s among the elite when it comes to cuteness. This likely is not a surprise to anyone, so it was best to get his name down and put him behind us.
Mats Sundin garnered a lot of attention from female fans despite his advanced age – when talking hockey standards that is. Surprisingly, a lot of older gentlemen made the list and they weren’t exactly voted in by the geriatrics of the gals either. Steve Yzerman, Pavel Bure, Joe Sakic and Mike Modano all got their tickets punched many times. Eric Lindros cannot be forgotten either because, well, the women haven’t erased his smouldering good looks from their memory banks.
It would also seem that that European je ne sais quoi stirs something within the lovely ladies of the hockey world. Pavel Bure was already mentioned and joining him are Petr Sykora, presently with the Minnesota Wild, Markus Naslund, who can be added to the list of the recently retired, Vesa Toskala, currently proving that you don’t need to be an elite goaltender to play in goal for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and Nicklas Lidstrom, the perennial all-star defenseman for the Detroit Red Wings, round out this list.
Now for one of the potentially biggest surprises, Mike Ricci. This retired forward whose teams included the Philadelphia Flyers, Quebec Nordiques, Colorado Avalanche, San Jose Sharks and the Phoenix Coyotes, was definitely among the top vote getters.
Joining Toskala as the GQ men in goal is Jose Theodore. Theodore is currently backstopping for the Washington Capitals and although his career may have had its share of highs and lows, his hunk status remains constant.
The immensely talented captain of the Calgary Flames, Jarome Iginla, will be thrilled to know he has made the cut along with his former team-mate, Matthew Lombardi, who is now attempting to lure the lassies in from the desert in Phoenix.
The hulking Sheldon Souray of the Edmonton Oilers and Brad Stuart of the Detroit Red Wings join Stuart’s team-mate, Nicklas Lidstrom, on the blue line to round out this edition’s all-hunk team.
