So I was having dinner with some people the other night and somebody (you know who you are) was shoveling food into their mouth so fast they looked like a human In-sinkerator. It was disgusting, disturbing, and definitely not how to eat for weightloss because if you're speed eating it doesn't matter if the food is healthy or not. Eating fast means you will overeat and take in too many calories which will result in zero weight loss.

If you're one of the many who struggles to slow it down, then here's some easy to follow mindful eating tips that will help you get your eating under control so you can start shedding those pounds.

How To Eat for Weightloss Tip #1: Stick to 1 Portion
Doesn't matter if you're eating pizza, fish and veggies, or ice cream, the key to losing weight is eating adequate portions for your needs. Grab a small plate and portion out your food before you eat it. If you want to control calories you can not afford to eat out of bags, boxes, gigantic plates or other to go containers. Do it at home, at the office, at your friend's, at a restaurant. You can always head back for more if you're still starving after your first serving but chances are you will not go back for seconds especially if you follow the next tip.

How To Eat for Weightloss Tip #2: Be Present While Eating
Eating over a sink, at your desk, in front of the t.v., while talking on the phone, or in your car guarantees that you will overeat. You don't register what you're eating if you're focused on something else so even if you're getting full you don't realize it until you've eaten too much. It's not easy to take time out when you're running around trying to get everything done but all it takes is 10-15 minutes to sit down and enjoy a mini-meal. Play 3 relaxing songs during your meal and then just focus on the next tip.

How To Eat for Weightloss Tip #3: Truly Digest Your Food
The digestive process doesn't even begin in the mouth so if you're "horking" down food without even seeing, smelling, or chewing what you're eating then you're bypassing a very important step in the digestive process and in case you didn't know digestion account for 60% of your metabolism!

According to Wikipedia "the cephalic phase of gastric secretion occurs even before food enters the stomach. It results from the sight, smell, thought, or taste of food, and the greater the appetite, the more intense is the stimulation. Neurogenic signals that cause the cephalic phase of gastric secretion originate from the cerebral cortex and in the appetite centers of the amygdala and hypothalamus. This phase of secretion normally accounts for about 20 percent of the gastric secretion associated with eating a meal."

Take full advantage of the digestive process by taking time to smell your food, look at your food, and chew your food thoroughly before swallowing. You will avoid overeating and improve your eating habits without much effort when you take your time.
