The Importance of Prayer
Are you struggling with a challenge in your life currently? Prayer to the Lord holds the answer.
Here are the words of the prophet Alma, as contained in the Book of Mormon, Alma 33:3-11:
3 Do ye remember to have read what Zenos, the prophet of old, has said concerning prayer or worship?
4 For he said: Thou art merciful, O God, for thou hast heard my prayer, even when I was in the wilderness; yea, thou wast merciful when I prayed concerning those who were mine enemies, and thou didst turn them to me.
5 Yea, O God, and thou wast merciful unto me when I did cry unto thee in my field; when I did cry unto thee in my prayer, and thou didst hear me.
6 And again, O God, when I did turn to my house thou didst hear me in my prayer.
7 And when I did turn unto my closet, O Lord, and prayed unto thee, thou didst hear me.
8 Yea, thou art merciful unto thy children when they cry unto thee, to be heard of thee and not of men, and thou wilt hear them.
9 Yea, O God, thou hast been merciful unto me, and heard my cries in the midst of thy congregations.
10 Yea, and thou hast also heard me when I have been cast out and have been despised by mine enemies; yea, thou didst hear my cries, and wast angry with mine enemies, and thou didst visit them in thine anger with speedy destruction.
11 And thou didst hear me because of mine afflictions and my sincerity; and it is because of thy Son that thou hast been thus merciful unto me, therefore I will cry unto thee in all mine afflictions, for in thee is my joy; for thou hast turned thy judgments away from me, because of thy Son.
The entire reason all sincere prayer is answered is because of the gift of God's son, Jesus Christ. The Savior atoned for our sins so that we could return to our Father which is in heaven. Because of Him, when we call on our Heavenly Father, He will listen to us.
Could there be a more immense blessing than to know that because of Jesus Christ, we have an open doorway to our Father's listening ear? How tremendous this knowledge can be, when we let it sink into our heart and mind.
Truly Jesus lives. Truly He died for us. And now truly we can rejoice. Because there is no problem so big that cannot be solved by turning to our Father in Heaven in sincere prayer.
As Alma states in verse 11 above, "And thou didst hear me because of mine afflictions and my sincerity; and it is because of thy Son that thou has been thus merciful unto me."
May we take well advantage of the grace offered us and turn to our Father in Heaven in sincere prayer. In this way, we show the Savior we do appreciate His sacrifice! In this way, we are better able to deal with any challenge facing us.
The best part? As it states under the topic of "Prayer" at www.LDS.org: "As we make a habit of approaching God in prayer, we will come to know Him and draw ever nearer to Him. Our desires will become more like His. We will be able to secure for ourselves and for others blessings that He is ready to give if we will but ask in faith."
We are not alone.
