Avenging Spider-Man #1 Review

Avenging Spider-Man #1 Review
Avenging Spider-Man is Marvel Comics effort to bring back the team-up books many readers grew up on. Short, fun stories featuring the web-head partnered with some of the other outstanding heroes of the universe. Readers are also treated to another team-up as fan-favorite artist Joe Madureira, or Joe Mad, and Zeb Wells for a fun story.

The art is the star of this book. Joining Joe Mad on the art team is colorist Ferran Daniel. If you are unfamiliar with Joe's work and are wondering why he's received how he is, I direct you to Uncanny X-Men, issues ranging from the late 320's to the 350's as well as the popular, though unfinished Battle Chasers. Any fan of Joe knows what he's bringing to a book. And he doesn't disappoint here. His Spider-Man and Red Hulk look amazing. From the subtle changes in Spidey's mask as he talks to the rage in all of Rulk's facial expressions; you can see some range in Joe’s work.

We also get to see how his Avengers look, albeit for only a few panels. I only had one question with the art, why did Joe Mad use an older Iron Man design? Obviously, is still looks good guided by his pencil, but I would love to see his rendition of the Stark's newest armor.

When you team that with Daniel's work as seen here, you get an amazing product. A page in and you get a taste of what Daniels bringing to the book. His vibrant colors make the pages pop; especially the portion of the book where the story takes place above ground. Yes, our characters head underground for their first team-up.

Don't be mistaken by what's said of the art, the writing is quality as well. Wells, who has made a name for himself on several Marvel titles including New Mutants and multiple Spider-Man books, weaves a nice tale that pairs our favorite wise-cracking superhero up with a less than entertained Red Hulk. After an Avengers mission, the two depart to handle another matter that has them encounter the ever-angry J. Jonah Jameson and head below the streets. You can tell Wells has a good understanding of Peter Parker’s sense of humor as he fits it in well here. There’s nothing too deep here, but it’s a good set-up for what should be an entertaining opening arc for this series.

If you're already a fan of the webslinger, are interested in the character, or just enjoy fun stories which don't require a vast backlog of knowledge, you'll enjoy this book. Readers also get a treat when they purchase this book. You will receive a code for the digital copy of this book. There is really no rush for that however, as the offer does not expire until November 10, 2012.

My recommendation is to buy this book and add it to your pull-list as I am and be prepared to be entertained.

I purchased this comic book with my own funds.
