BSO Contest and Season End Events in Baltimore

BSO Contest and Season End Events in Baltimore
Though nearing the end of its 2008-2009 performance season, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra has a number of noteworthy performances left before summer. Consider some of these outstanding highlights on your next trip:

Disco Days and Boogie Nights, May 28—31

Attendees are encouraged to come dressed in their finest disco attire for this SuperPops BSO concert series. Musicians will be similarly attired, too, giving you one last chance to “shake your grove thang” before the BSO’s season ends. Prizes are available for those who are best dressed. The program will include popular favorites from Gloria Gaynor, ABBA, the Bee Gees and more.

Baltimore Native Hilary Hahn, June 4—5

Violinist Hilary Hahn is a Baltimore local with accolades galore for her musical interpretation. Even critics at the New York Times have praised Hahn’s ability to “…make her violin sound achingly sweet, tender and lyrical, as well as forceful and grandly dramatic.” This performance includes the “technically demanding” violin concerto of Jennifer Higdon, an acclaimed composer and teacher at the Curtis Institute of Music.

Psycho, July 9—10

This series features two performances of the musical score of psycho alongside a live showing of the film. The July 9 performance will be at Strathmore in Rockville, MD. The July 10 performance is at the Meyerhoff in Baltimore.

The Music of Disney, July 16—17

Mary Poppins, The Lion King, and others will be featured in this BSO musical revue of Disney favorites. Audiences are encouraged to dress up as their favorite Disney characters. The July 16 performance will be at Strathmore in Rockville, MD. The July 17 performance is at the Meyerhoff in Baltimore.

Queen, July 18

It’s not often that you’ll find classic rock in the repertoire of an internationally acclaimed performance orchestra. Yet, the BSO’s performance of Queen’s greatest hits testifies to the orchestra’s range of performance and its members’ ability to interpret good music from a variety of genres. This performance is for rock and classic music lovers alike and will be at the Pier Six Concert Pavilion. Brody Dolyniuk is the lead vocalist.

Oh, Say Can You Sing? Contest, July 18

The BSO is opening up auditions for a chance to sing the national anthem alongside its orchestra at the annual Star-Spangled Spectacular Concerts with BSO July 3—4. These American-Idol-like auditions are by appointment only and must be approved by a parent or legal guardian. The judges will include Reagan Warfield from the 106.5 FM Mix Morning Show with Jo-Jo and Reagan, BSO staff, and local voice experts.
