Very often beginners think that they cannot help the charities because they don’t know the fancy stitches and can only create a granny square. Well this is for all you beginners. I admit I often make small granny squares when I am watching TV just to keep busy. These squares can then be assembled into very nice crochet baby blankets.

This is going to be some very basic pattern ideas for some crochet granny square baby blankets. I hope to encourage crocheters that are just beginning to crochet, to realize they can also help with the charities. You don’t need years of experience to crochet a very pretty baby blanket. If you can do a simple granny square than you can also create lovely blankets.

This is to get you thinking about different ways to use up left over yarn and to create some nice soft thoughtful gifts whatever the level of your crocheting skill. Charities need help and it is not just the experienced that can participate. This is a joy that we can all share.


A few ideas for you is to make a number of 6 inches granny squares. For a 36-inch blanket you would need 36 of these 6 inch squares. Sew or stitch them together in your favorite fashion and make a contrasting boarder of a few rows of double crochet and you will be surprised with the end results.

For an 18 X 24 inch preemie crochet blanket you would only need 12 of the 6-inch squares. These squares would be assembled with 3 squares across the top and 4 squares down the side. You could use the same boarder as above or make a simple shell stitch boarder.

If you enjoy making squares you could use 4-inch squares to make up the various sizes needed. Example would be 3 square across and 3 squares down would make you a 12 X 12 inch blanket. These are often used as burial blankets. Nobody comes prepared to bury their babies so the hospitals could really use these.

Ok you are a real newbie to crochet and don’t know how to assemble the squares. Than make one square, keep crocheting until it is 12 inches by 12 inches. Change color and add a boarder of all double crochet. This is about the easiest blanket any one can make and I have seen it done up to be very pretty. So there you go, what ever level you can help with charity crochet.

A word of caution for the blankets and the type of yarn you use for the babies. I know the yarn with the metallic type thread running through them is very pretty but these are not practical for babies in the hospital. The preemies are kept under heat lamps and this is not safe with that type of yarn.

Another suggestion is color especially for the burial blankets. Yellow is not a good choice because of the jaundice these babies suffer. It makes their coloring all the worse. It is best to pre-wash the blankets as it removes the sizing that yarn companies put in.
