What Title Should You Choose

Guest Author - Kristin Peoples

The title of your EZine or Newsletter is important. It is the first glimpse into your product. The title should reflect your company's values and goals. You may think of a cute name, and that is ok for certain products but make sure you give it some more thought. Names of the EZine or Newsletter are like tattoos. You don't want to be a 70 year old man with a tattoo of "Hot Guy" on your arm. You may still be hot, but you probably won’t want that tattoo on your arm at that point. It's just not very appropriate and it can be embarrassing down the road. Choose the name wisely.

You can always change the name down the road, but it can prove costly. It can cost your business in dollars and cents literally and can cost you in brand recognition. It will also cost you in man hours of changing your EZine, newsletter, website, subscribers, etc.

Who is your customer?

There are many different categories of Newsletters and EZines. Your Newsletter may cover political issues or help advertise your business. Think about your customer. What are their priorities? Will they open your newsletter from their Blackberry or on their computer?

The Title should describe the content

Your niche may give you a few ideas into the name of the newsletter. If the newsletter is eco- friendly, you may choose Green Journeys, Hip Green or something similar which tells y
our reader that the newsletter is what they are looking for. Reading the title gives them a chance to become curious about what's inside.

Power Words

Do not clutter your title with unnecessary words. Use newsletter power words such as "trends, today, alert, challenge and connection" in conjunction with the name of your business or your niche. Do not use more than 5 words in your title or it can be harder to remember.

Once you decide on a few titles, think them over for a period of time. Do not make a quick decision you may regret. You will put a lot of effort behind advertising the newsletter. It is prudent to take some time before committing to the title. Let other people read the title and give comments. If possible, let some of your customers or potential customers have a say so in choosing the title. You can even make it a contest and give away services or prizes for the winner. In the end, the winner is you because getting your customer involved not only attracts your readers but gives them input in your business. Customers are most likely to be interested in a company that gives them great customer service and asks for their feedback or input.
